The short answer

The best AI receptionist is the one that completes your real call workflow within your budget. Compare the booking result, exception handling and total bill before choosing a provider.

Start with the job you need done

A solo plumber who needs an address and a confirmed visit has a different requirement from a shop answering opening-hours questions. Write down the outcome before comparing products: a message, a qualified enquiry, an appointment or a transfer. Those are different levels of service.

This is a shortlist, not an independent league table. KEDO Labs sells one of the services discussed. We reviewed the linked providers’ published information; we have not conducted a controlled head-to-head performance test.

Three options to investigate

OptionPublished billing approachQuestion to test
Smith.ai AICall-based plansHow does the AI-to-human handoff work for your specific exception?
GoodcallUnique-customer allowancesCan your required booking flow run on the selected tier?
KEDO LabsSetup plus monthly subscriptionDoes the demonstrated phone-to-calendar workflow fit your trade?

Smith.ai and Goodcall publish different usage units. A repeat caller can affect those bills differently. Check the current allowance and overage rules rather than comparing headline prices alone.

Use the same five test calls

  1. A straightforward enquiry in your service area: check the name, address and callback number.
  2. An unavailable appointment: check that it avoids promising an impossible slot.
  3. A caller correcting an address: check the final record, not just the spoken response.
  4. A request outside your services: check that it follows the agreed rule.
  5. A caller asking for a person: verify the handoff or callback process.

Record pass, partial pass or fail for each outcome. A pleasant voice cannot compensate for the wrong address or a booking that never reaches the calendar. Test with permission and avoid using genuine customer details unnecessarily.

Decide using evidence from your workflow

Give booking accuracy and usable records more weight than the number of listed features. Ask who maintains the script when your hours change, what happens during an outage and whether you can export your records. Request a demonstration of the exact calendar or CRM connection you intend to use.

Consider a human service or a hybrid arrangement when the workload involves frequent negotiation or sensitive exceptions. Keep a documented route to a person even if routine intake is automated.

For trade-specific examples, compare our plumbing workflow and HVAC workflow. Use the pricing worksheet to finish the decision.
